There are many things to love about the Hay Adams. It has a terrific location, just a block away from the White House. It is a throwback in time with its clubby bar and old wood check in desk. The staff are quick to greet you and to offer you assistance. The restaurant is lovely.
Ultimately though, it comes down to your room and we were disappointed with ours given its rate. We were booked into a standard king room at $399 a night. We arrived late in the evening, well after midnight. The desk staff checked us in very quickly and sent us to our room on the 8th floor. The room decor was nice with beautiful linens on the king sized bed. The room itself though was fairly small, smaller than I was expecting. The view was that of an office space across an alleyway. The bathroom was a single sink small vanity with a bathtub although it was impeccably clean and well equipped.
We were in town to attend a black tie dinner and realized immediately that the tiny bathroom/vanity was going to be a challenge, I phoned the front desk but was told no other rooms were avaiable. I was assured we would be relocated to a room with a larger bathroom the next day.
We had meetings out of the hotel most of the next day but the hotel did leave a message offering us a new room. I was told the new room would be roughly the same size but that it would have a larger bathroom. We were running late for our dinner and passed on the offer to move. I do think well of the hotel for making this offer to us, Again, service here was very good.
I just wanted something far more spacious for the money spent.
That said, if you do get one of the hotel's nicer rooms, it is well worth a visit. You cannot beat the location.. and it is part of Washington's great history.
