My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon in late June and LOVED it! We did a lot of research to find *the* place, and we're really excited when we stumbled across this locally owned gem. We were not looking for a large chain-like resort and wanted a place with lots of privacy and local charm - all of which we got at Stonefield! I'll touch on some of the highlights (sorry it's so long...feel free to skim):
1. THE VILLA:
(a) The private pools are AWESOME. We stayed in Frangipani, clearly the favorite of most guests, and the pool was nearly the same size as the main pool at the resort. It was warm enough to get in by 8am (the sun was hitting it by then) and stayed nice into the darker hours. We got some of the best sun in the morning hours.
(b) Wildlife at the resort is incredible. If you are interested in local island birds, lizards, etc. this is a great place. We really enjoyed sitting on the porch watching hummingbirds enjoy the banana plants. Watch out for giant ants though; they have some mighty large pincers! In addition to those creatures, you will also find a lot of stray cats around the entire resort. One in particular, with her 2 kittens, enjoyed spending time on the porch with us.
(c) The room itself was great. Incredible view of the Petit Piton and the sea (from what we could tell, they all had a great view), comfy bed, HUGE closet, good sized bathroom, nice kitchenette that served our purposes (snacks, wine, beer, etc.). Only problem we had with the room was the toilette wouldn't stop running, but when we placed a work order they came the same day to fix it. (Speedy service!) Also, our villa had AC (not sure if they all do or not), which was really great in the evenings as it got muggy in the room. During the day it was usually nice enough to just keep the doors open and let the breeze come in.
(d) For anybody worried about safety (there are a few horror stories out there about robberies on St. Lucia) - the doors are VERY secure. All of the doors have multiple locks, and I felt very safe the entire time. The resort is also has security walking around 24 hours a day. And on a similar note, the resort is great about respecting your privacy. If you want to be left alone in your villa all week, they don't ask a thing - you just hang a strand of beads on your villa entrance.
2. THE RESORT
(a) The staff was extremely wonderful. Everyone was very friendly and always asking if we needed anything. They restaurant staff got to know us (and other guests) by our 2nd or 3rd dinner and we enjoyed getting to know them all.
(b) As I said before, they are speedy on service. We also had a problem with our safe (I think it was my fault), and they also had it fixed the same day.
(c) Our spa treatment is one of the few things I think might have room for improvement. Our massages were heavenly, but the mani/pedi aspect could have been better for what we paid. I get the impression they are trying to strengthen that part of the resort, so I won't complain that much.
(d) The shuttle service offered was also really great to have. If you do a package with outings, they are ready to pick you up and drop you off at your scheduled time. You can also take it into Soufriere (the town about a mile away) or the Jalouise Beach (up the road at another resort) but you have to be sure to let them know both when you want to go to town and when you want to be picked up (otherwise you get stranded like we did!). Just something we wish we'd known before hand.
(e) Our package had some great activities (waterfall/nature trail and sunset cruise), and they have many others to choose from. Some are through the resort, and others are coordinated through another agency. Either way, the front desk takes care of all the arrangements and can charge it to your room to prevent complication. We were more interested in relaxing at the pool or beach, so didn't do many of them, yet were impressed with the selection.
(f) The food was really good! Every night is a different menu with a different "theme," so there was always variety. The portions are HUGE though, and we quickly became known as the couple who couldn't clear their plates. Nonetheless, it was all pretty delicious! As for the bar - great job there too! Drinks were reasonable (hit up the 2 for 1 happy hour Wednesday and Sunday) and tasted great!
A FEW OTHER THINGS:
(a) On our last day we decided to take a shuttle to Anse Chastanet ( a beach on the other side of town, about a 20 minute/$20 taxi cab ride) to do something different. We highly discourage people from doing this because the resort that oversees the beach property is very rude to people who are not guests there. We were not allowed to use any of the umbrellas or chairs, and were also told that we had to get a full day pass in order to snorkel (i.e. - you couldn't just rent the gear for that). If you want to go to a beach, we really enjoyed Jalouise, a quick 10 minute FREE shuttle from Stonefield. They give you free snorkel gear, have a great bar, and while they charge you for chairs, don't really enforce it. We also kayaked for $10/hour and enjoyed begin able to see both pitons after paddling out. In addition to the great view, we got to see a sea turtle (considered good luck on the island).
(b) The ride from the airport is NOT as bad as I thought it was going to be. If you are very sensitive to car-sickness, maybe you'd have issues, but the view is so beautiful it kind of distracts you from the curving road.
Overall, we really had a great time and enjoyed the resort. I highly recommend it and would be happy to answer any other questions if anybody has one.
