I came across Hillwood more or less by accident, having lived in DC more than 20 yrs and having found it only this year. If you like orchids, you have got to go!! There are three greenhouses full with the most magnificent orchid species! I went to an orchid re-potting session and got to meet a caring orchid care-taker with... more

We drove to Hillwood and did not have a reservation. This was on August 9. It wasn't crowded as we were there when it opened but I believe making a reservation would be a good idea. We were there for several hours, beginning with the 15-minute orientation film. We took our time, touring the amazing greenhouses, all of the outdoor... more

We drove an hour to get to the museum and when we arrived the entrance was barred. A scowling guard came out and said" "What are you doing?" We said we had come to tour Hillwood and he opened the gate. We bought our tickets and planned to take the last tour of the day ( there are very few)... more

Russian Faberge eggs, Russian religious icons, Russian royal china, Russian gold, diamonds, silver, Russian dacha, beautiful Japanese/French (!) gardens... This place is a treat, and a great change of pace from the Mall. Popular with ladies' garden groups, so try to make a reservation. When you get there, make reservations for docent-led garden and mansion tours and the cafe straight... more

Hillwood is a true DC treasure, tucked away from the crouds in a beautiful neighborhood. Marjoree Merriweather Post was a avid collector of French and Russian decorative art. The mansion is lavishly decorated and exhibits a large collection of Russian art . The gardens are beautiful and enjoyable to sit and relax. The conservatory has more than 200 orchid species,... more

Hillwood is a beautiful estate tucked away in one of the many beautiful neighborhoods of Washington, DC. Marjorie Merriweather Post acquired Hillwood in 1955 and began to create a series of pleasure gardens for her leisure and the entertainment of her guests. The tour includes a 15 minute video about the history, then you are free to walk throughout the... more

If you like visiting mansions or if you love art or gardens...you must go here. This was the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post. I bought a book on her in the gift shop (maybe you could order it online?) titled: American Empress by Nancy Rubin. It is an excellent biography (although sometimes so positive you wonder if her family paid... more

As a local resident, I always like to find new things to do in DC. I read about Hillwood in a magazine and decided to go on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The property is located in the Van Ness neighborhood and the website says it is about a 20 minute walk from the metro station. The property has tons of... more

Hillwood, a mansion house, plain on the outside, but marvellous on the inside, was designed by its twentieth-century inhabitant Marjorie Merriweather Post (daughter of the founder of the Postum Cereal Company; wife of E.F. Hutton of the General Foods Corporation) as a sort of museum. Each room spectacularly decorated in 16th-/17th-century French or 18th-/19th-century Russian style (with antiques belonging to... more
