This is a hidden gem in DC at the corner of New York Ave. and 13th St. The art work, all by women, is magnificent, covering a wide range of art from different eras. The building, which had been a Masonic Lodge and movie theater at one time, is stunning and one can easily see how much money and care... more

This is a fine smaller art museum with excellent paintings by outstanding female painters such as;Elizabeth Vigee-Lebrun,Judith Leyster,Angelica Kauffmann,Berthe Morisot,Mary Cassatt,Gabrielle Munter,and Lavinia Fontana. Everything in this museum is well-labeled and well-explained. On a recent visit,I enjoyed their exhibit on females in ancient Peruvian and MesoAmerican times(emphasizing ceramic figures). It is located very close to the Metro Center Metro Station. more

I have been to this museum twice, and had memorable art experiences both times. The museum has permanent exhibits from the private collection of its founder, and those are very instructive (who knew there were female Renaissance painters?), but what I love are the temporary shows.
