If you don't visit the Prado when it's free, avoid long lines by purchasing your Prado tickets online before visiting. (Our teenagers, all under 16, were free.) If you have a problem purchasing online (as I did), you can call the Prado directly and pay for the tickets with your credit card. I had a problem with this as well... more

This is one of the great museums of the world. I try to go every time I am in Madrid. While I agree that the lighting and physical plant are important aspects of a museum, in this case, these issues are secondary to the much larger point: this is the finest collection of Spanish Art by several orders of magnitude.... more

This is a first-class museum...Of course, the highlight is "Las Meninas" but there is so much to see in this place. The architecture of the building is beautiful, and the neighborhood is very nice. It is free on Sundays, so that's a tip to save money. Be prepared to spend about 2 hours. This is truly an amazing museum...It is... more

I love museums and when I stayed in Madrid I didn't pass the chance to visit this world famous museum. I stayed the whole afternoon admiring the beautiful works. It's quite a big museum but, of course not as big as the Louvre, so you might need more than 1 visit if you're an avid fan of Spanish arts, which... more

I have recently visited the Prado Museum during my stay in Madrid. I was expecting a lot from this world famous institution, and I thought I would spend a full day inside. Instead, I stayed only a couple of hours and was very disappointed by the poor maintenance of the building, and the embarassing lighting of the paintings (you can... more

Although the Prado is quite famous, I prefered the Reine Sofia. I agree with the other traveller- if you like paintings of old rich guys, Jesus, Mary, and angels, this is the gallery for you. It can get pretty crowded which takes away from the pleasure of quietly contemplating some of hte masterpieces there. By the way, the guards get... more

The Prado Museum is, undoubtedly, a major highlight of our tour of Madrid. I toured the museum with my two daughters (16 and 27 yrs old). We hired a guide for 40 Euros. Although we like her narration of the museum, the artists, and the paintings, she did not appear as a professional. She asked us to show her the... more

I bought the Paseo del Arte pass for 12€ so it only cost me 4€ for entrance. Security makes you check backpacks and the sign shows “no cameras”. But after seeing everyone using their cameras, I went back to security and retrieved mine. Do yourself a favor, arrive before 9am and enter through the Puerto de Goya north side by... more

We drove like 4hrs from Costa Blanca for 2 days in Madrid for this museum, and it was worth it. My girlfriend is a art history major so she was my own private tour guide :) I'm not an art buff but I still enjoyed myself. Lots of great pieces of art, enough said. more

Fascinating, but recommend you hire a private guide for the "inside" information about the paintings. Don't bother with El Greco, see his paintings in Toledo. more
